America Reads pairs work-study eligible college students with 2-4 elementary school students in a school for literacy tutoring. Tutors receive substantial initial training and ongoing support to tutor struggling students in reading and writing. America Reads tutors also provide instructional support in elementary school classrooms at their tutoring site. Local partners include elementary schools within CMS.
Tutors must be work-study eligible and apply to become a tutor through Student Employment at UNC Charlotte. Tutors earn $12 an hour to start with a dollar an hour increase in pay each year they continue as tutors ($13 an hour in year 2, $14 an hour in year 3, etc.). Tutors must have reliable transportation and a heart for working with children.
